“MINDLESS yobs” who vandalised a Rhos on Sea paddling pool have left councillors“deeply saddened”.
Damaged cones and broken glass were discovered in the pool on Abbey Road following seasonal refurbishment work, which had been carried out in preparation for the pool to be filled for the summer.
Rhos on Sea councillor, Roger Parry, said: “The council had put cones around the pool after completing some work on it before for filling it with water. They had given it a lick of paint and make it look nice and clean.
“I went there on Thursday morning with Cllr Phil Edwards and Cllr Merfyn Thomas, which is when we believed it was going to be filled, and the cones had all been thrown into the pool, and there was broken glass everywhere.
“Finding vandalism like that in such a short time left us all deeply saddened. It is a very popular pool and a lovely area for kids.”
After discovering the potentially dangerous damage, the councillors got out their brushes and shovels to help clean up the pool in time for the Bank Holiday weekend.
Cllr Parry said: “We grabbed our brushes and cleaned it all up to try and make the place safe.
“There is a lot of exciting things happening in Rhos on Sea to improve the environment. We have the orchard near there which was planted by some of the local schoolchildren. The mindless yobs who did this damage will not ruin Rhos on Sea.”
Assistant manager at First Step Day Nursery in the village, Nikki Whalley, confirmed the paddling pool is important to the community.
She said: “As a nursery we use the park near the pool in the summer to take the children there. We always do a risk assessment and if we came across anything like broken glass, we can’t use it. So something like this really affects the children.
“There isn’t a lot of money around at the moment for people and everything is so expensive, so it's nice to go somewhere which is a free facility. A lot of our parents use the paddling pool and have campaigned to save it in the past with petitions. Feelings run very high when things like this are vandalised.”
